Bus shelters and garbage cans to be removed for G20
The City of Toronto will remove 1,000 pieces of street furniture, including bus shelters, garbage cans, and newspaper boxes, so you won't get 'owies' during the G20 summit.
City spokesman Rob Andrusevich said the removal of these items in the G20 security perimeter and traffic-calming zone is to ensure "a safe G20 experience for everyone."
He forgot to remind you to wear sunscreen and say "thank-you," so I'm taking that liberty now.
Garbage and recycling bins will be replaced with bags on hydro poles, which will be monitored for overflow.
City officials aren't alone in their safeguarding exuberance. Last month, the University of Toronto announced it will close its downtown campus during the summit due to security concerns.
Rumour has it that city officials are considering issuing mandatory floaties in case of rain and installing cushion covers for sharp sidewalk edges. I'll keep you posted.
