Morning Brew: New formal complaint against Rob Ford, Doug Ford goes on the offensive, TTC worker killed by train, Gardiner closed Saturday, and a tourism timewarp
And so the circle of Rob Ford's life as mayor continues. Yesterday a Toronto resident, Jude MacDonald, filed a complaint with the city's integrity commissioner, Janet Leiper, alleging that the mayor violated Article VI of Council's Code of Conduct, rules that prohibit the use of city resources for private matters. Attracting Leiper's attention is what led to Ford's court appearance last week. "Respecting the taxpayer means respecting the rules," MacDonald told the Globe and Mail.
In related news, councillor Doug Ford accused Globe city hall bureau chief Kelly Grant, the author of the original story, of "lying," urging her to get off her "lazy ass" in an interview with AM640. Stay classy.
A large part of the Spadina line is closed this morning after two TTC workers were struck by a service vehicle near Yorkdale station, killing one. The accident happened just before 5 a.m. and has resulted in a shuttle bus service between Downsview and Lawrence West. The second TTC worker suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries. The location of the accident means some trains are unable to enter service, and the TTC says it will borrow trains from the Bloor-Danforth line.
Also in closures, the Gardiner Expressway will be shut down for maintenance this weekend from 2 a.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday between Carlaw Avenue and the Humber River. Workers will perform maintenance on 800 catchbasins, 19 overhead signs, and 35 traffic cameras, and 700 metres of guardrail. Two ramps at Jarvis Street remain closed.
Finally, visit Toronto circa 1995 in this video, a time before we had music taste or anyone able to hold a camera steady. Apparently this aired across Canada. Oh, the humanity. [via Reddit]
