Morning Brew: David Miller leaves a mess, snakes and owner reunited, high school principal charged with theft, Lawrence Heights makeover in jeopardy
Mayor David Miller is leaving one hell of a mess on Nathan Phillips Square for his successor, Rob Ford, and we don't mean the surplus. Workers have smashed up the concrete of the skating rink and demolished the skating pavilion, in addition to cutting down dozens of trees all over the square. When asked about the project, Ford's incoming chief of staff, Nick Kouvalis, said "There is nothing we can do at this point." Sadly, many Torontonians feel the same way about the election's results.
Just one day after we sung the praises of one Toronto tattoo parlour, another one has come under fire after questions were raised about its hygiene. Toronto Public Health issued a warning Monday about It's Just Body Art body piercing and tattoo shop, located at 1072 Wilson Ave. near Keele St. The agency is urging its patrons to get tested for blood-borne infections. Sure puts the drunken -Woody Woodpecker- tattoo-urge in perspective.
Reunited and it feels so good! That's how Jacob Lance is feeling after being reunited with his long-lost pet snakes, Steve French and Veyera. Since June the pesky pythons had been squatting at a home near Coxwell and Danforth after breaking out of their cages. In other snake news, Marilyn, a pink-and-yellow girly snake, was also reunited with her owner on the same day. And no, Samuel L. Jackson didn't take part in their rescues.
A veteran high school principal of Martingrove Collegiate Institute has been charged with stealing nearly $90,000 from a fund for student activities he used to lead, including money for new sports equipment. If convicted, his punishment should definitely include one hour's detention for life.
The Lawrence Heights make-over might be in jeopardy if mayor-elect Rob Ford has his way. Ford is hoping to kibosh the 25-year project that would revitalize impoverished buildings with condos and public housing for mixed-income families. Phew. I'm just glad the new Nathan Phillips skating rink is still a go.
