toronto road closures

Road closures will snarl downtown Toronto traffic into a total mess this month

Toronto sports fans are anxiously anticipating the biggest few weeks of the year, but motorists are less enthused about the rolling road closures that will grind traffic to a halt in the core of the city for much of April, lasting for days, weeks, or even months depending on how our teams perform.

It's kind of a perfect storm of sports action, with the Toronto Maple Leafs embarking on another quest to win a first-round series, the Raptors competing in the NBA Play-In Tournament, and the Blue Jays returning to the Rogers Centre for their home opener, all crammed into the same week.

Toronto Police are warning the public of upcoming traffic restrictions as fans are set to pour into Maple Leaf Square/Jurassic Park outside of Scotiabank Arena, and west down Bremner Boulevard to the Rogers Centre during the overlapping playoff runs and home opener.

Toronto Police 52 Division issued a statement Tuesday morning, advising the public that "to ensure the safe flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, a number of road restrictions will be in effect at the end of every playoff game."

"There will also be pre-game restrictions on dates where both the Scotiabank Arena and Rogers Centre have overlapping events scheduled."

Police advise the public that "York Street and Bremner Boulevard and Scotiabank Arena will be open to local traffic only, and there will be ongoing traffic disruptions for the duration of the playoffs in the areas of Scotiabank Arena and the Rogers Centre."

Thursday, April 13, 2023, will mark the start of this busy 2023 playoff season, with the Jays' home opener happening April 11, the NBA Play-In Tournament running from April 11-14, and the NHL Playoffs kicking off Mon, Apr 17.

Some restrictions have already begun, including a closure of Lake Shore Boulevard from Bremner to York Street for repair work, which will last from April 3 to April 25. Traffic in the area will be further restricted as York Street is set to be closed at Lake Shore Boulevard West from April 10 through 20.
