Travis Gillespie

York Region police officer dies following early morning car crash

York Regional Police have confirmed that one of their officers has died unexpectedly this morning following a collision in Markham.

Constable Travis Gillespie, 38, died on-scene after a collision occurred between a white Honda Accord and a Porsche Cayenne in the Major Mackenzie and Warden area around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Chief of Police Jim MacSween confirmed Gillespie was on his way to work when the crash occurred.

"This is devastating news for all members of our organization," said MacSween, in a news release.

"I offer my deepest condolences to Travis' family, friends and colleagues. It's never easy to lose a member and to have lost Travis so unexpectedly is very difficult."

Just two years ago, in 2020, Gillespie joined the force after working with Metrolinx as a Metrolinx/GO Transit special constable.

York Regional Police will not be investigating this collision and have handed it off to Peel Regional Police, to "ensure members of York Regional Police are not further traumatized by this incident."

Gillespie is the second constable to die in the Greater Toronto Area this week, after Toronto Police officer Andrew Hong was killed at a Mississauga Tim Hortons on Monday.

The Markham Economist & Sun is reporting that Gillespie died from a head-on collision with an alleged impaired driver.
